One of my favorite ways to get out of the house is to take a family picnic. This can be as simple as eating in your backyard, at your local park, or my personal favorite, in the vineyards!
I’ve posted a bunch about how I absolutely adore the Untertürkheim vineyards, and how lucky we are that they are so close to us! It was a beautiful autumn weekend here in Stuttgart and we decided to spend our Sunday picnicing in the vines.
I quickly made PB&Js, sliced a few bell peppers and threw in a package of hummus (my kids devour this!), sliced an apple and off we went!
You can easily get to Untertürkheim by u-bahn or s-bahn, walk through the town and up the weinberg or vineyard hill and there’s tons of paths with stunning views.
Pre-kids, we always took the trains to get to the vineyards. Admittedly now with a bunch of kids and a double stroller to schlep uphill, we prefer to drive and park closeby. You can find parking near the Rotenberg Weingartle, which is an amazing restaurant. If you’re lucky, you may be able to snag a parking spot at one of the besens, or local wineries.
We had the best afternoon walking between the vines, watching sheep play, and enjoying our picnic amongst the most beautiful yellow, orange, and green vineyard leaves.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – October is the BEST month to stroll the vineyards for stunning autumn colors!
After we finished lunch, the kids found the apple trees and picked a few apples to eat for their walk back. How cute is this!
It was a perfect Sunday. 🙂
