My House Plants and a Peek into our Stuttgart Home

Since purchasing our first home in April (spoiler: it’s in Charleston SC but we still live in Stuttgart Germany), I have become particularly obsessed interested in home interiors.  Both my husband and I have been renting our entire adult lives and I am ready to finally make a space mine.  This past spring while we were under contract for our forever home, we put a hold on our frequent travel and I realized I needed something to take up my mind space: no more planning and booking trips in my free time, homegirl needed something to do.

Cue a great hobby to pick up in the Spring: house plants!!! Historically I haven’t had the best green thumb so I wanted to ensure I didn’t kill anything first and my plants actually survive, and I succeeded so here we go!  A bonus is that I get to chronicle a little of our first married home, our beautiful flat in Stuttgart that we love.

In the Kitchen

We have this little wall nook in the kitchen where it opens up to the dining area, and this past spring I finally realized that it is the perfect spot for a ladder wall of plants.  I quickly measured our wall and bought this beauty on amazon.  It’s cheap but functional and perfect to display our green friends: I am a big fan!  I also found this gorgeous bamboo sun mirror (similar here) and had to have it.  It is petite but makes me happy and the sun aspect is so perfect for my little plant nook!

This area is North facing with an East window right next to it.  It mostly gets morning light but everything has been doing great over the full Spring and Summer.  I’ve gotten almost all of my plants from Obi, while my herbs come from the Edeka or Al Natura.  Obi has a great plant selection and they are all reasonably priced if you’re in Germany and looking to add some plants to your home!

From top to bottom: basil, rosemary, pilea peperomioidest, variegated phildendron, variegated ivy (from Blumen 2000), watermelon plant, fern.

The original intent was I’d have fresh herbs close by for cooking, but I love the trailing vines and my fern as well.  The variegated phildendron is my favorite, it has stayed so lush looking and has dark and light green coloring.  It also grows very fast compared to the rest, I think it looks so pretty spilling over the shelf!

Across from the dining table we have a north facing window that I’ve put two baby ivy plants and a red flamingo flower.

Also if you haven’t been to our house yet, we are lucky to have the best views in the city from multiple rooms and our rooftop.  You’ve been warned. 😉

In the Living Room

My larger plants hang out in the living room and I love them so much!  My pride and joy is the monstera although I have had our rubber tree for 4 years and this thing has grown to be a monster… at least 5′ on it’s stand!

Right when you walk in I have a peace lily, calathea, and the large rubber tree against an East facing window.  The peace lily also catches a North facing window’s morning light.

Then against our north facing window I have my favorite Monstera Adansonii and a fiddle leaf fig tree.  I am obsessed with the monstera adansonii’s beautiful leaves, and it has grown tremendously this summer.  It took me a few months to figure out how to best water the fiddle leaf fig and I finally found watering it from the bottom works best.  It has a little bit of a temporary solution of a dinner plate 😉 but it’s finally starting to grow leaves!

Also, I love this little reading nook bench in this spot, next to my green friends!  In fact it’s where I’m sitting now as I write this post. 🙂

That’s all of my plants!  I love taking care of them and watching them grow.  Do you have any house plants? What are your favorites?
