If you live in a city you’re likely well aware of how important city parks are. A great park is essential to making a good city great and Stuttgart delivers big with the Schlossgarten. It is massive and one of my favorite parts of the city. Going for a run through the beautiful Schlossgarten is very therapeutic for me so I wanted to highlight it in case you’re not aware of it!
The Schlossgarten is very accessible and begins right behind the Schlossplatz. Tuck behind the Schloss to head to the Opera house and you’re at the beginning of the park. It spans about 4km in length divided into three sections, each bringing new scenery. In the summer months it is packed with people sunbathing, pick-nicking, and playing games in the grass, and the paved paths are where you’ll find runners, bikers, and walkers. I typically run straight from my house in the city through the park and back, choosing to do a 6km, 8km, or 10km loop. I snapped a few pictures on my run the other day, enjoy!
The Oberer Schlossgarten at the Opera.
After you pass through the Oberer Schlossgarten you reach the Mittlerer Schlossgarten, surrounded by a lake. This area is right at the Hauptbahnhof, and there’s a popular biergarten in the park as well as a life-size chess board.
Pass through the Mittlerer Schlossgarten you come to my favorite part, the Unterer Schlossgarten, a huge expanse of grass and tree lined pathways. This long section includes a good spielhaus (play park) for kids, outdoor grills, and lots of grassy areas to sunbathe. This area goes to Bad Canstatt and right up to the Wilhelma Zoo. It feels like such an escape from the hustle of city life and is my happy place. : )
^^The pathways are all tree lined like this!
The birds will be chirping and you’ll probably spot an egret, along with ducks and their ducklings.
Have you enjoyed the Stuttgarter Schlossgarten yet? It is such an escape!
