Stuttgart Fall Picnic

Recently I’ve made an effort to explore our own city more.  Stuttgart has a lot more to offer than meets the eye – there’s MUCH more to the city than just Königstraße and Schloßplatz.

When the weather forecast called for a few sunny summer-type October days over the weekend in Stuttgart, I knew exactly what our next adventure would be: exploring the Grabkapelle auf dem Württemburg, or the grave chapel on the Wurttemburg hill.

I was blown away by how beautiful it was, and Dave and I kept looking to each other with the same reaction asking, are we really in Stuttgart right now?!  The best part is, it’s only a 10 minute train ride away from the Hauptbahnhof.  TEN MINUTES and you can be in vineyard heaven!

We took the train to Untertürkheim, walked through the cute town towards the vineyards.

The walk up reminded me of our pathway in Trier, no?

I was so excited walking up the beautiful path but I had no idea what was waiting for us!  It seemed every time we turned a corner, the next view was even more breathtaking.

This was pretty much when I was in heaven ^^

Stuttgart046.jpgCan you see the chapel on top of the vineyard hill?  The story behind it is so romantic.  King Wilhelm had the chapel built in memory of his wife Katharina.  This was her favorite spot but she died unexpectedly.  Inscribed on the chapel is ‘Love Never Dies’.  King Wilhelm lived many years after but never remarried and is buried next to his wife in the chapel.  It’s such a beautiful love story, on the highest hill overlooking Stuttgart.

We had so much fun exploring the vineyards, we knew we had to come back on Sunday to have a picnic, just the two of us!

We were so lucky to have perfect ‘summer weather’ over the entire weekend in Stuttgart!  We packed our picnic basket and off we went!

We found a nice spot, opened our picnic basket and laid out the blanket, and opened up all of the goodies we brought!

Kessler Sekt always makes the occasion next level!

I think we found the perfect spot, overlooking the chapel of undying love <3

Stuttgart015It was such a magical and romantic way to spend a Sunday afternoon.  I could have stayed forever, really.  If you’re in the area, you have to check out the Grabkapelle auf dem Württemburg!

Get there:

It looks like this could be the Italian countryside but this is in Stuttgart, believe it or not!  Take the S1 to Untertürkheim, a 10 min ride from the Stuttgart Hbf (!).  It’s about a 30 minute walk from the S-bahn to the vineyards, and about an extra 10 min to the Grabkapelle.

Know:

While it is technically possible to drive up to the vineyards, I strongly recommend walking from the train as it’s so beautiful.  You won’t regret it!

Have you ever had a picnic with friends or with your partner?  I’d love to hear how it went!
